Material Handling

Nothing is more important to ensure that your business operations run smoothly and efficiently than having a warehouse or distribution center that is completely organized. And since we deal with material handling issues on a daily basis (and have a warehouse of our own to keep orderly!), allow us to provide you with some tips on how you can organize your materials like a pro!

Before you can expertly organize your materials, you need to have a warehouse that is clean and laid out both efficiently and effectively.

WAREHOUSE LAYOUT TIPS

A good warehouse design is imperative and the starting point for all your other organizational efforts. Make sure you’re utilizing your facility properly and maximizing your available space. You may also consider alternative storage solutions (including vertical storage) and work stations like mezzanines to take full advantage of the space in your facility. (To read more about how we can help lay out your facility, check out THIS POST. To learn more about mezzanines, check out posts HERE and HERE.) Additionally, no warehouse design is complete without an emphasis on safety. Organizing everything in your warehouse, from the picking areas to the loading dock and shipping area, for safety and efficiency will help your entire operational efforts to run more smoothly.  Read more about warehouse safety in our blog post HERE.

MATERIAL ORGANIZATION TIPS

When it comes to organizing your materials, having a plan in place is essential. Here are some basic tips that will help you get organized in no time!

-First things first, sort and organize your inventory so you know what kind of storage you need and how much.
-Place like items together so they’re easier to find. It’s also a good idea to declutter and clear out old products.
-Utilize appropriate pallet rack and other shelving systems (including wire racksstackable bins for smaller items, etc.) to store your materials. To learn more about the different types of pallet rack on the market, check out THIS POST
-Make sure you’re using the right size of storage system for the materials at hand.
-Implement an inventory system so you know exactly where things are kept in your facility. Ensure that they are easily accessible and visibly labeled.
