Orbital ATK is a renowned, global leader in the development of aerospace and defense technologies. They design, build and deliver space, defense and aviation-related systems to customers worldwide as a prime contractor and merchant supplier.
Engineering Storage Success
As one of the leading suppliers in aerospace and defense technologies in the world, the idea of working with an industry giant such as ATK was a bit intimidating at first, but it was a challenge we were anxious to meet. After our first project, the ATK staff was immediately impressed with our strong attention to detail and quick completion time. As a result, we earned their trust which led to numerous other material handling projects for ATK, including shelving, racking, modular expansions and more. We have continued working to improve ATK’s facilities to help them continue their legacy of success.
The Projects
Shelving & Workstations
- ATK employees were thrilled when we upgraded them to brand new Rousseau workstations and coordinating mobile carts and heavy-duty cabinets. Our focus was to bring improved production with the addition of better security and fully customized storage for tools and supplies. To deliver the best results, we dedicated ourselves to becoming familiar with the employees' work processes. We designed each unit with modular components and accessories that would be the most beneficial for their specialized use.
Cantilever & Pallet Rack
- We designed a layout of cantilever racking for high-capacity storage that would give ATK as much flexibility as they needed for heavy, oversized loads. The project included 275 cantilever uprights and a total of 2,000 linear ft. of guard rail for its completion. Additionally, ATK was looking for flow pallet rack to provide automated inventory control. We installed Steel King pallet rack which supplied them with the versatility of 90 different pallet positions.
Modular Offices
- ATK's need for expansion called for the addition of 8 in-plant offices. We built & customized the new modular additions in 900’ linear ft. of space with vision walls to allow supervision. The quick installation allowed ATK to continue production with little disruption to their work site.
Storage systems built around aerospace production
The ATK project brings together several purpose-built storage systems for a large aerospace manufacturing operation in Utah. Jorgenson supplied high-capacity cantilever rack for long materials, Rousseau cabinets and workstations for tools and parts, and dense automated storage designed to make better use of the available building height.
The cantilever installation creates long, open storage rows without front columns blocking access. Adjustable arms let the facility organize material of different lengths while wide aisles preserve clear loading and retrieval paths. The scale of the installation gives production teams substantial capacity while keeping stock visible and accessible.
Closer to the work areas, modular drawer cabinets, mobile workbenches and enclosed storage keep tools and smaller components organized. A later automated storage project added another layer of high-density capacity, creating a coordinated system that supports changing inventory and production requirements across the facility.
