How To Increase Pallet Positions With Pallet Racking For Sale At JMH

Making more out of less.  It is what a lot of companies are trying to do in order to maximize their bottom line.  So when the company’s warehouse or distribution center becomes SO packed and literally overflowing at the seams or product, well it is time to take a good hard look at how to increase pallet positions and hold more product rather than have to move facilities.

Jorgenson Material Handling recently did a job at FlexPak in North Salt Lake City, UT.  Flexpak had been dealing with this issue…

FlexPak did not having enough room in the facility to hold the product before it was sent to customers.

“So basically we did 100 sections of pallet racking for them and we made it so they could increase their pallet storage capacity by 1,300 pallet positions,” said Jorgenson Material Handling Project Manager Lance Jorgenson.  “They decided to go with the closed tube design pallet racking and the thing that is neat about that style is it is just heavier duty than other  styles and it will withstand more accidental abuse and hold up longer in their facility.”

Imagine that.  Increasing the useable space in your warehouse just based upon simple modifications alone.

“I think one of the solutions we came up with was that FlexPak had previously always used 40” deep pallet racking in their facility and Jorgenson Material Handling and we recommended that they go switch to 48” inch deep pallet racking because they use a lot of packaging in their existing facility that was being damaged because the loaded pallets were sticking out into the isles and the forklifts which were moving in and out were damaging a lot of the product,” Lance explains.  “And FlexPak would have to throw out a lot of the damaged product, and by choosing to switch to the 48” deep pallet racking, their product was inside the envelope or boundaries of the pallet racking system which limits the ability of the forklift drivers to damage stuff and is now saving them a lot of money in the long run when it comes to damaged product.”

If that 8 inches can save FlexPak THOUSANDS UPON THOUSANDS of dollars otherwise wasted on the fact the product was being damaged, that should make most warehouse managers leave the computer right now, go walk into their warehouse and begin measuring to see if the same thing is happening right underneath their noses!

So why is using a closed tube design pallet racking system so crucial?  Well because if you plan on using that pallet racking for years to come, it’s best to

“Basically they had to pay a little more up front but they are getting a stronger design and have to pay for less repairs down the road or have to replace stuff,” said Jorgenson.  “The main advantage to the closed tube style is that the tube pallet racking is a heavier duty pallet racking design.  This heavy duty designed system will better resist impact and being damaged and you will have a longer life span with this type of tube pallet racking.”

And the improvements that Jorgenson Material Handling offered to FlexPak didn’t stop there.

“Also we had to put some safety netting up that was about 120 feet wide and 26 feet tall and so that was because when they load the pallets onto the pallet racking, so it protects everyone below if a pallet collapses or gets pushed too far, it doesn’t fall and hurt the people that are working below,” said Lance Jorgenson.  “It’s just common sense.  Having a safety net like this does decrease the company’s liability in injuries.”

True.  Some codes don’t require safety netting like the stuff Jorgenson Material Handling set up for FlexPak.  Over the many years in the industry, Lance admits he has seen people cut corners with safety–something his lengthy experience in the material handling business has proven to him isn’t such a wise idea.

“Oh yes, people think they can cut corners but I guarantee in the end those cuts might end up biting them in butt if someone gets hurt and it could mean a million dollar lawsuit because the company didn’t want to spend a few extra thousand dollars on something like warehouse safety netting,” said Lance.

But in the end, is it a good investment?

“It is a huge safety concern that if you don’t put that in, somebody could get hurt.  It’s just a liability nightmare if something were to fall and someone were to be under there and they get hurt.  It’s not required, but it is a valuable safety precaution,” Lance sums up.  “Well I strongly recommend that they install warehouse safety netting and then tell them the reasons why, but in the end it’s their decision and their money and they have to decide if that is something they want to do or not.”
