Rack Supported Building

Rack supported buildings facilitate a secure warehouse structure with an integrated pallet racking storage system, supplying users with a two-in-one solution and numerous benefits. This economical racking type does not require an existing building for its construction and offers unmatched storage density with the lowest cost of construction, when compared with other high rise buildings. These rack structures also offer minimized completion times with typically lower insurance rates. Rack buildings are structurally sound and ideal for all types of environments including high winds, snow load and seismic applications. Rack warehouses offer exceptional space optimization, using all available surface area with racking abilities that can reach up to 80 feet or more. Clad rack buildings are ideal in cold storage, food processing and various cooler and freezer settings.

The different profiles designed by Mecalux are used to build clad-rack warehouses whose most striking characteristic is that they do not require the existence of a building prior to construction, with all the reduction in costs that this implies. Here, the racks support their own weight, the product load and the asymmetrical loads applied from lifting devices as in a traditional warehouse. They can also withstand the weight of the cladding structure along with external forces (wind, snow, etc.). These warehouses are designed to work both at room temperatures and in cold conditions (freezer chambers).

    Advantages:
  • Enables maximum use of available surface area without wasting space.
  • Does not require the existence of a building prior to construction.
  • Conventional or automated systems can be used.

The height of clad-rack buildings is limited to the maximum height permitted in local regulations or to the reach height of fork-lift trucks or stacker cranes. Warehouses of more than 30 m high can be built. These warehouses are built to work with either conventional or automated processes. Initially an analysis should be carried out to determine the characteristics of the warehouse and how it is to be linked to the other production areas.

Common customer questions

Questions about Rack Supported Building

These answers provide a starting point. Final equipment, capacity, layout and installation requirements must be confirmed for the specific facility and application.

How is pallet-rack capacity determined?

Beam capacity depends on the beam model, length, connector and load distribution. Frame capacity depends on upright design, frame depth, bracing, unsupported column length and the spacing of beam levels. Use manufacturer or engineer-approved capacity information for the complete configuration.

Do pallet racks need to be anchored?

Industrial pallet rack is generally anchored to a suitable concrete slab according to the approved design, manufacturer requirements and applicable code. Anchor type, embedment and location are project-specific.

How often should pallet rack be inspected?

Employees should report damage as soon as it is observed, with regular documented inspections performed at intervals appropriate to traffic, impacts and risk. A qualified person should evaluate questionable damage.
